Mercer was raised in Hawaii and attended Northwestern University, where she studied journalism. After graduation, she worked as a writer and editor, then moved to the PNW, where she reconnected with her love of the natural world and trained as a Master Gardener. Studying locally and in the UK, she has now worked in landscapes for the better part of two decades.

Mercer approaches her planting designs as a gardener first, bringing hands-on horticultural knowledge. Her planting plans create a feeling of awe and sense of place unique to each site. They are inspired by the wild around them, but designed to be beautiful.
